Marc Bloch, au nom de la France - Hugues Nancy
To mark Marc Bloch’s induction into the Panthéon in June 2026, this documentary, written and directed by Hugues Nancy, traces the extraordinary life of the historian, committed intellectual and member of the Resistance who was assassinated in 1944. The film looks back at the life of a Jewish thinker and patriot, whose work profoundly transformed French historiography, and whose life was marked by anti-Semitism and Nazi barbarism.

A Jew, a patriot and deeply committed to republican values, Marc Bloch—who described himself in 1940 as an “Alsatian Israelite”—saw his life upended by the rise of anti-Semitism, the Occupation and Nazi violence. Having joined the Resistance, he was murdered in 1944.
The narrative draws on a rich collection of archives, including photographs, notebooks, manuscripts and texts, enhanced by visual design that brings them to life on screen. In the absence of film footage, Marc Bloch’s thoughts are embodied by an actor, a narrative choice that lends the film a tangible dimension. Access to previously unseen family documents further enhances the documentary’s historical value.
Hugues Nancy thus brings Marc Bloch’s ideas to light through an approach that is at once sensitive, political and commemorative.
