First National Day of Commemoration of Alfred Dreyfus’s rehabilitation in 1906
On 12 July 1906, after twelve years of a case that had deeply divided French society, the Court of Cassation definitively rehabilitated Captain Alfred Dreyfus, an innocent man convicted of treason in 1894. To mark the 120th anniversary of this decision, the first National Day of Commemoration of the Rehabilitation of Alfred Dreyfus will be held on Sunday 12 July 2026.
Against a backdrop of anti-Semitism and political-military conspiracy, the ‘Dreyfus Affair’ divided public opinion for over a decade. After two trials, imprisonment and then more than four years in a penal colony on Devil’s Island in French Guiana, Alfred Dreyfus was finally exonerated, having been wrongly accused simply because he was Jewish.
This first National Day of Commemoration of Alfred Dreyfus’s rehabilitation pays tribute to his struggle and to the victory of justice and truth over hatred and anti-Semitism.
